Changing the Story

A winding path among plants and flowers

We need to change the story. The myth of being a nation of rouged individuals, of “self made man” which has brought us among other things capitalism on steroids. The rich railroad and industrial barons of wall street who made their millions on the backs of many who were exploited and abused, Using prison, child, uneducated poor whites and minority labor to do the work, who often died while making the “self made man” rich. The current world owners of industry who continue to exploit the world’s resources, including its people. Mining information of humans and using it to enrich themselves. The new “self made man” who continues to contaminate the environment and has led to the climate crisis in which we live today.

The self centeredness of the rough individual, the “self made man” myth, that looks out for me, with little regard and appreciation for the contribution of others, and for the value of preserving rather than exploiting the planet.

We have created myths, stories to justify, to glorify, to make us feel good, to create an illusion of our rightfulness, our place in the community and the world. We have created the myth of thanksgiving of harmony and goodwill of Native American, rather than the real story of bringing disease that diminished the native population, and then taking advantage of what they had planted and cultivated.
